West Kordofan’s farmers demand compensation from oil companies

Several farmers in the areas of Kharasana and Kailek areas in West Kordofan said that their farmlands have been damaged by the oil extracted in their areas.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the farmers demand from local and international companies operating in the field of oil in their state to compensate the people affected. If not, they will file a complaint to bring the companies to a competent court.

Agricultural experts have proven that the arable land in West Kordofan had already been damaged since operations started in the oil-producing areas of the state.

“My farm got damaged since the installation of the pipe line from here to Khartoum in 1998. I have not received any compensation despite the heavy losses incurred to me,” an affected farmer said.

Citizens in the area accused the security personnel of being involved in the cancelling of complaints raised against the oil companies about damage of their farmlands and pollution. They added that they are fed up with the barriers put by the authorities to protect the companies.
