Joint forces composed of the police and Rapid Support Forces in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur State, seized substantial quantities of imported and local liquor on the Sudanese-Chadian border. The confiscated alcohol underwent destruction on Wednesday at the police headquarters, witnessed by Acting Governor Al-Tijani Al-Taher Karshoum and State Police Director, Lieutenant Colonel Ali Zakaria.
Simultaneously, the Emergency Court in El Geneina levied financial fines against twelve convicts, with sentences ranging from five hundred thousand to one million Sudanese pounds.
Acting Governor Al-Tijani Al-Taher Karshoum commended the forces involved in the alcohol seizure, urging them to prioritize security and combat negative phenomena. He emphasized the gravity of the alcohol threat, leading to the decision to ban alcohol and drugs.
Karshoum stated, “When we implemented security measures for the state, alcohol was the biggest threat to us. So, we issued a decision to ban alcohol and drugs. Our forces implemented this decision to the fullest extent, and the evidence is this seizure.”
Highlighting the menace of alcohol and drugs to the youth—the future leaders of the country—Karshoum vowed to combat anyone jeopardizing the prospects of young people.
The official issued stern warnings to merchants and promoters, emphasizing, “We will not be complacent about the future of our youth.” Karshoum asserted that their forces stand ready to raid any location where alcohol and drugs are present.
Karshoum urged Imams, preachers, and civil administrations to address the dangers of drugs in mosque pulpits and public spaces. He highlighted the state’s recovery, enhanced safety, smooth movement, and increased commercial activity throughout various localities and neighbouring states.
Encouraging refugees to return, Karshoum assured them of the state’s restored safety and security.
Lieutenant Colonel Ali Zakaria, the State Police Director, reported that arrests were made through three campaigns conducted by a joint force of the police and the Rapid Support Forces.
He emphasized their vigilance against all negative phenomena, with forces securing all entry points. Zakaria characterized the seized drinks as hazardous to health, urging citizens to provide information and assuring them of the forces’ deployment at all state entrances.
El Geneina is one of the war-torn Darfur region’s capitals that the RSF has fully taken over last month. The RSF has been accused of carrying out a wave of ethnic killings in West Darfur following the capture of the state.
