A five-day training workshop organized by the Darfur Rimal Center for Training and Human Development to combat hate speech will conclude tomorrow in El Geneina in West Darfur State.
The workshop being held at the Academy of Health Sciences started on 5 October.
The Center’s Director General, Yousif Mohammed Yousif, told Radio Tamazuj that there are 650 participants divided into six groups who were taught about hate speech and limiting its spread.
“Hate speech has spread widely among the state’s residents leading to confrontations between parties,” he stated.
One of the participants, Mamdouh Bashir Ibrahim, said he benefited from the workshop and learned about the negative and wrong concepts that spread among families and citizens.
“I learned about the reasons for the spread of tribal wars, how to solve them, and the difficulties they face from tribal discourses,” he said.
Another participant, Alaa Al-Din Abdul Latif, said now understands how hate speech fragments societies.
“I understood hate speech broadly and know that it is the cause of many of our problems and we hope that the material reaches all the people in the society,” Abdul said.
Meanwhile, according to another trainee, Arafa Abdullah Saber, the workshop changed her perception of hate speech, and she was educated about the indicators of the vice.
She urged the communities in Darfur to shun and abandon terms and references associated with hate speech.
