Traffic Police in Western Bahr el Ghazal state said seven traffic accidents were recorded during this year’s Christmas holiday.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj in Wau town on Tuesday, the state traffic police director Brigadier Jeremiah Maker Nai, said out of the seven accidents, one was fatal, in which one person died.
“We recorded seven accident cases. The first case occurred at Kabur Sach along the road to Tonj; the Warrap Minister of Finance was travelling to Tonj to celebrate Christmas there. The accident killed the driver called Ireneo Bernado, and the minister, including four others, sustained injuries,” Nai said.
“The other six accidents were minor cases that happened within Wau town, and all were motorcycle accidents,” he added.
The traffic police officer said the accidents were caused by overspeeding. “The reason for all these accidents was overspeeding and too much drinking of alcohol, and they were young men at 18 to 20 years old,” he added.
Nai said that those arrested in connection with the accidents would be taken to court on Wednesday.
Traffic accidents are common in South Sudan, often the result of the bad condition of the roads and reckless driving.
