Wau to host this year’s International Women’s Day

South Sudan Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare has announced that this year’s International Women’s Day will be commemorated in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal.

South Sudan Minister of Gender, Child and Social Welfare has announced that this year’s International Women’s Day will be commemorated in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal. 

“This year, the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare will be celebrating the International Women’s Day in Western Bahr el Ghazal in Wau under the leadership of Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal, Sarah Cleto,” Minister Aya Benjamin Warille told the press on Friday in Juba. 

The day is celebrated annually on March 8 to acknowledge women’s political, economic, social, and cultural achievements across the world and to promote women’s equality.

This year’s theme is ‘Promote Gender Equality through Innovative Technology towards better South Sudan’.

The minister disclosed that the event will shed light on the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls.

“The event will spotlight the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces and addressing online and ICT-facilitate gender-based violence, bring women and other marginalized groups into technology,” she said. The day calls for accelerating gender parity, significant activities witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements and rally for women’s equality.”

“On International Women’s Day, we remember that as long as one woman faces discrimination, harassment, inequality, or oppression, we all do,” she added.

Several government officials, members of parliament, women and youth groups, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and the UN are expected to attend the event.
