Wau Teaching Hospital launches testing for female reproductive cancers

The main referral medical facility in the Bahr el Ghazal region, Wau Teaching Hospital in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Tuesday, launched free screening for female reproductive system cancer for women from 25 to 49 years of age.

According to the hospital’s Director General, Dr. James Angelo Marchello, reproductive cancer normally affects women through the fallopian tubes and is a cancer that can take 20 years without being detected yet it is dangerous to women’s reproductive health system.

“The fallopian tubes cancer may take 20 years without one knowing and that is why we came up with a program for testing ranging women from 25 to 49 years. Any woman in that age bracket should visit Wau Teaching Hospital Department of Delivery for testing,” he said. “If we find any swelling which may cause cancer, we will treat it free of charge here at the hospital. I hope women will benefit from this offer.”

According to Dr. Marchello, the experts were trained in Juba to carry out their professional duties at Wau Teaching Hospital.

For her part, Dr. Halama Abdallaziz, the state’s  Director of Health, urged all health workers at state-run facilities to carry out awareness on the ongoing program at Wau Teaching Hospital so that women turn up for testing.

“Let us hope that all our colleagues at all health facilities will carry out awareness so that our clients come to the hospital for testing,” she said. “We should not fear if there is a sick person referred for examination. The examination will be done here at the hospital and treatment continue for a short period which will be successful.”

“If the conditions are beyond our capacity, the client will be referred to Juba but at the moment we have a center that is working 24 hours with full services,” Dr. Abdallaziz added.
