Wau state parliament elects new speaker and deputy speaker

Members of the state parliament for the proposed Wau state in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal on Tuesday in their first sitting elected a new speaker and deputy speaker.

Members of the state parliament for the proposed Wau state in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal on Tuesday in their first sitting elected a new speaker and deputy speaker.

The MPs elected Anyar Anyar Dwur, who hails from Marial Bai in Jur River County as the new speaker after the state government offered the seat for the county. Viola Alexander Omely, who hails from Wau County, has been elected as the deputy speaker.

The newly elected speaker Anyar Anyar stressed in his speech in parliament the importance of stabilizing the security situation in the state and educating the citizens about the implementation of the peace agreement signed August last year.

“Our country is going through hard time and facing huge challenges,” Anyar said. “We should work to ensure the security stability, implement the peace agreement signed by the warring parties recently, rebuild trust between ourselves, and build the social fabric.”

The Wau parliament was established according to an order issued earlier March for the establishment of state legislative councils consisting of 36 members who were elected in the 2010 election.

The 32 members of the newly established parliament were sworn in by the Chief Justice of Wau state in the presence of the governor.
