Members of South Sudan’s Wau State legislative assembly officially began their recess on August 14.

Members of South Sudan’s Wau State legislative assembly officially began their recess on August 14.

The acting assembly speaker, Viola Alexander Umeli said the state assembly was to close on August 12, but it was a public holiday.

“The agenda of our sitting today [Wednesday] was about the announcement of the assembly recess, which was supposed to be on August 12, but it was postponed due to Eid al-Adha and the death of our honorable member,” Umeli said.

She added, “Therefore, when we resumed our sitting, there was no more agenda except the announcement of the recess period and the assembly shall remain closed, starting from August 14, and honorable members will resume sittings on November 14, 2019”.

Umeli said lawmakers are ready to disseminate recommendations of the inter-state peace conference as well as the content of the revitalized peace agreement to their people through public rallies.

“In this recess, the honorable members will be talking to their people about two items, one is to disseminate the 24 resolutions of peace conference between farmers of Wau state and pastoralists of Tonj and Gogrial states held in July, which need implementation. It is our mandate to go to the cattle camps and to the farmers to let them understand what people have agreed upon,” Umeli stressed.

She added, “Another item is the dissemination of the revitalized peace agreement because it has not also reached the grassroots level”.

Meanwhile the acting speaker appreciated the citizens for their trust and urged MPs to strongly represent their constituencies in the state assembly.
