Wau prison receives food aid

The Director of Wau Central Prison in Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, Maj Gen Andrea Macherenga Marial, on Friday confirmed receiving food assistance from the Governor and the local traders.

Last week, the women inmates revealed the lack of food at the facility and called for assistance.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Marial said the prison had run out of food, leaving the inmates depending on mangoes.

“From March 31 to date, the issue of food has been a problem but the Governor brought for us 10 bags and yesterday, he again brought us 10 bags of flour, 5 jerricans of cooking oil, 1 bag of salt and 5 bags of beans,” said Marial.

“We had been saying that these prisoners belong to the country, and our traders managed to provide us with 1 bag of flour. I have been making an appeal through radio for people to help,” he said.

“I am so happy after receiving the aid because the inmates at the Juvenile and the Central cells were eating mangoes,” he said.

Marial mentioned that the prison was meant for only 200 inmates but was currently accommodating 1,006.

The Director reiterated his appeal to individuals and the government to alleviate the suffering of the prisoners. He expressed concern that the number of inmates may increase due to the rise in criminal activities.
