Western Bahr El-Ghazal State traffic police on Saturday morning arrested a truck driver of Somali origin and a South Sudanese motorcyclist ‘bodaboda rider’ after they were involved in an accident that claimed one life.
The motorcyclist’s passenger, a South Sudanese national, died on the spot at the Jur River Bridge.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, the police investigator, Captain Denis John explains the circumstances of the accident.
“We received the information around 8:00. Upon our arrival, we found that there was a container truck coming from Eastern Bank and also one of the bodabodas was following the truck,” he narrated. “The bodaboda rider tried to pass the truck but there was another vehicle coming. So the passenger on the bodaboda fell and the truck killed him.”
He adds, “Now we have arrested the truck driver and the bodaboda guy. The truck driver is identified as Mahammed Amed Ali from Somalia, and the bodaboda rider is called Mathiang Lual. The person who passed away is identified as Garang Deng Deng from Northern Bahr El-Ghazal. He was buried at Eastern Bank,” John said.
The traffic police officer has advised drivers to be wary especially during the festive season when the accidents increase.
“I want to tell them to be careful because usually at the end of every year we used to register many traffic accidents, especially for the bodaboda riders. It is better to use lower speed within the town to save the lives of others,” he advised.
