The mayor of Wau town in South Sudan’s Wau state says the security situation has returned to normal in the town especially during Christmas holidays.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Mayor Mel Aleu said that the security situation in Wau is stable, while denying reports that hundreds of local residents fled to the churches and UN camps due to insecurity in the residential areas.

Aleu pointed that the local residents preferred to shelter inside the churches and UN camps due to shortages of food in the area, saying the residents who fled their homes are now receiving food aid from humanitarian agencies inside the camps.

A religious leader told Radio Tamazuj earlier that hundreds of families in Wau town were still sheltering inside the UN protection camp and churches due to insecurity in Wau town.
