A number of civilians were harassed and arbitrarily arrested by government security agents in South Sudan’s Wau State, a top state official said.

Andrea Mayar Achor, governor of the proposed Wau state, told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that his government has ordered the release of several citizens being detained unlawfully by government soldiers in Wau town.

Mayar pointed out that security officials dispatched a military police force to release the detainees and then arrest the security agents who arrested those citizens.

Separately, Andrea called upon the conflict-displaced people who are still sheltering inside the church and UN camp to return homes, saying the security situation returned to normal in Wau.

The state official pointed out that properties of the displaced people are being looted within the town. However, Andrea didn’t announce any security plan to protect the citizen’s properties in Wau town.
