Wau-Aweil road passable only to Land Cruisers

The main road from Aweil to Wau linking the two states of Western and Northern Bahr El Ghazal has been cut off by water damage from heavy rains, leaving the way passable only to Land Cruisers.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj in Aweil on Monday, a number of drivers from Aweil said the Aweil-Wau main road is very bad and difficult to pass unless one is driving a Land Cruiser vehicle.

"What is happening is that we (the drivers) are being affected by this road incident which starts from the Northern Bahr El Ghazal border up to Reefia checkpoint. Now we have stopped driving small vehicles except Land Cruisers because they give us a hard time and we may have to return with passangers on the road sometimes," said Luka Madut, one of the drivers.

Madut called on the government to improve roads by contracting road workers and by supervising them to secure quality work.

Another driver, Bol Baak said "The problem with roads is they do not have water channels to allow the water to pass."

Baak also stated that even a few Land Cruiser vehicles can barely manage to travel to Wau. He said they spend 3 to 4 hours on the road rather than 2 to 2 ½ hours as was the case previously.

The disruption to the road during the rainy season last year was less than this year.
