Wau: Alliance for Land Rights urges inclusion of women in decision-making

The Alliance for Land Rights in South Sudan called for greater inclusion of women in decision-making processes during an event marking International Women’s Day in Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, on Saturday.

The organization gathered approximately 60 participants, including women, men, girls, and representatives from government and civil society, at Ghazal Hotel in Wau to commemorate the global celebration.

Moses Ucu, Program Officer for the Alliance for Land Rights, highlighted the importance of the event, stating, “We organized this to show women they are valued in the community. Our work focuses on land issues, and women are often excluded from these processes. We want to ensure their voices are heard and included.”

Ucu urged men to support women by involving them in decision-making, both in urban and rural areas. “We must move away from negative cultural practices and ensure women feel appreciated. It is crucial to include our mothers, sisters, and daughters in these discussions,” he added.

Inspector Lilian Severio, a participant, expressed gratitude for learning more about her rights, particularly regarding land ownership. “I now understand more about women’s rights, especially how to acquire land. I urge the organization to extend these programs to women in rural areas,” she said.

Celestino Amancio, another attendee, emphasized the need for equal opportunities for women and girls in South Sudan. “Programs like this help us understand each other better and encourage women to succeed. If a woman has the chance to work, she should not be prevented from doing so,” he said.

Rebecca Unguec, a participant, praised the organizers for recognizing International Women’s Day. “Today is a wonderful day for women. We feel valued and appreciated. This event has shown us that women can also play a role in land management,” she said.

Unguec encouraged women to strive for their full potential while maintaining respect for themselves and others.

International Women’s Day, observed globally on March 8, celebrates the achievements of women and promotes gender equality. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” underscores the importance of collective efforts to advance women’s rights.

In South Sudan, the day is marked by community gatherings, educational programs, and discussions on women’s empowerment, reflecting similar observances worldwide.
