Local residents in Sudan’s West Kordofan State and the neighbouring Abyei border area are reporting water shortages owing to dry season conditions as well as the influx of refugees from other areas.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Saturday, local residents of Dabab area in West Kordofan State said they were experiencing an acute shortage of water and other essential services.

They expressed resentment at the Urban Water Corporation and called on its management to quickly act to relieve the suffering of the people.

A barrel of water has reached 10 SDG in price, one source explained, claiming that people are now also fetching drinking water from streams.

Meanwhile, residents of Agok administrative unit in Abyei also complained of a shortage of water supply. They also requested the local authorities to urgently distribute water to reduce the suffering of the local people.

For his part, the director of water in Abyei Area, Chol Akonan, explained that the demand of people was high during the dry season.

Akonan announced that the Abyei Administration and the non-governmental organizations operating in the area will provide water. He also attributed the shortage of water to the influx of refugees to the area.
