Shortages of safe drinking water hit various areas in Heiban area in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains owing to dry season conditions, a church leader said.

Rev. Matta Al Mubarak, who is based in the area of Heiban, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that local residents were experiencing an acute shortage of water since the last three months.

"Water situation has been a big problem over the last three months," Al Mubarak said.

The Sudanese pastor said many villagers; especially women have to walk long distances to fetch drinking.

"In a place called Shuwaia I know about it very well, people are suffering of lack of water,” he said.

The church leader urged aid agencies to help provide water for the needy people of Nuba Mountains.

"There is no any other way apart from drilling of Boreholes in Nuba Mountains during this particular time,” he concluded.
