Citizens in Sudan’s West Kordofan State are reporting shortages of water and power supplies owing to malfunctioning generators and lack of spare parts in the area.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday, several residents of Babanusa, Muglad, Lagawa, Dabab and Meiram towns said they were experiencing power blackouts and water shortages.
“The power has been fluctuating in the town over the last two weeks – it works sometimes for almost two hours a day,” a citizen of Babanusa said.
Meiram town also has been affected, says one resident: “Our generator in not functioning due to lack of spare parts. The blackout has most affected those people who are running workshops and mills.”
“We are also facing a water crisis because the reservoirs we have stopped working, so people and cattle get water from the only remaining one cistern,” he added.
People in the western Kordofan region called on the authorities to provide water and electricity supplies to alleviate the impact on the people.
Nomads’ migration
Leaders of the Misseriya nomadic tribe in West Kordofan State meanwhile have reiterated their commitment to peaceful coexistence with Dinka Malual in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
This comes after a peace conference held on 10 February between the Ajaira clan and Dinka Malual in Buk area.
Ajaira clan leader Musa Mohamed Al Rahima told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that they requested from the government to provide secure paths for the nomads into South Sudan.
The nomads also called on the government to provide essential services to them particularly education, health and alternative water sources along Kordofan’s western migration routes, according to the tribal leader.
