The commissioner of Tonj East County in Warrap State on Wednesday said there have been no communal clashes since deadly sectional fighting claimed the lives of over 22 people on 30 October.
Tonj East County Commissioner, John Deng Kok, said that there were only unknown gunmen who have been terrorizing communities and causing fear despite efforts by the county and state governments to contain the situation.
“Nothing has happened again after the fighting of 30 October but there are still unknown gunmen shooting at people at night but no death occurred,” Commissioner Deng said. “Yes, there are armed youths who took the law into their hands even though the government is conducting peace meetings in the area.”
For his part, Warrap State government spokesman Riing Deng Ading, confirmed that the general security situation was stable as a high-level peace committee is delivering peace messages among conflicting communities.
“The security situation has been calm for the last two weeks since fighting ended,” Seng Ading said. “As of now, the government peace committee headed by the peace minister and comprised of the ministers of culture, youth, and sport and the security advisor is there talking to people about peace. Now they are done with the people of Lou Paher, Cacuat, and today (Wednesday) they are at Romich and will continue to Luachjang.”
