The governor of South Sudan’s Warrap State has stated that the swearing-in of the appointed members of the state legislative assembly will take place in the first week of May 2022.
In November 2021, President Salva Kiir reconstituted the Warrap State legislative assembly as per the revitalized peace agreement.
However, Warrap State has not been able to swear in the appointed MPs.
While addressing SPLM party trainees in Kuajok on Monday, Governor Aleu Ayieny Aleu, announced that he will induct all the appointed legislators.
“Honorable members of the state transitional legislative assembly, thank you very much for your patience. You are not MPs until I swear you in because there was confusion in Juba that delayed the swearing-in of the assembly, that is why I don’t have a parliament but bear in mind that the names announced by the president will be my MPs,” the governor declared.
Governor Ayieny added that he is consulting with the national government and changes will be adopted if necessary.
Riing Deng Adiing, Warrap state spokesperson confirmed the announcement and said preparations for oath-taking had begun.
“The governor of Warrap State announced the swearing-in of assembly members and that will be on the 3rd of May. That governor gave directives to the assembly provisional clerk to call all the members of parliament to come to Kuajok within seven days so that they are sworn in,” he said.
“There are so many challenges that is why assembly delayed because the governor was busy addressing the issue of insecurity. Now there is time to complete the government structure,” he added.
However, the state speaker Kuec Deng Mayar, doubts the swearing-in will happen on the 3rd as announced.
“The announcement is made for 3rd of May. We are now waiting for our members of parliament (MPs) to come to Warrap State. If there is a quorum, the event will take place. Otherwise, there is a likelihood the date will be changed,” he said.
