Local authorities in Gogrial West County in Warrap State have said that humanitarian NGOs operating there are unable to reach most of the areas that have been affected by the floods since July.
Victor Wek Koor, the Gogrial West County commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj last week that parts of his county have been completely flooded since the beginning of July but that the government and partners did their best to reach some areas with food and non-food aid.
“Some flood-affected areas are unreachable because the waters are still deep. The areas are Pakal Lol, Awan Pajok and Awan Rup,” Commissioner Wek said.
Paramount chief Marol Marol said the floods wreaked havoc in his area of Pakal killing 15 people and destroying the village’s entire crop.
“Yes, there is flooding in the area and has cost lives of many people and destroyed many crops such as sorghum, millet, and maize among others,” Chief Marol said.
Another resident who preferred anonymity said the inaccessibility occasioned by the floods has contributed to skyrocketing commodity prices.
“There is no sorghum at all because the rains have destroyed the crops and cut mobility. Currently, 3.7 kg of sorghum costs 700 SSP in Akhon Market,” she lamented.
