Warrap State MPs go on recess

The Warrap State legislative assembly on Thursday broke off for a three-month-long recess.

The Warrap State legislative assembly on Thursday broke off for a three-month-long recess.

Amiir Amet, acting governor of Warrap state, said that the recess will allow the Members of Parliament to assess the situation in their constituencies.

“Your recess is of great importance to our people in constituencies and your parties because it allows you to interact with people in the villages and share views and experiences,” she said.

“Regardless of relative peace in the state, I request all of you to go, meet your constituents and talk about peace and anything that unite people,” she added.

Kuec Deng Mayar, the Speaker of the state legislative assembly, appreciated the executive for cooperation and urged legislators to spend enough time with their constituents to know their challenges.

“I appreciate the governor and his team for the cooperation rendered to the assembly and the effort he made to stabilize the security by engaging greater Tonj and Twic communities in peace dialogues,” he said.

Mayar called upon Warrap communities to desist from communal violence and increase food production instead.

The Speaker appreciated the lawmakers’ achievements in the last two sessions.

“It is better to highlight the few achievements for the last two sessions. We have amended and adopted the rules of procedures, that is, the assembly conduct of business, adoption of the governor’s policy statement, adoption of unification of three former states employees’ salary structure, passing of 2022-2023 fiscal year budget and tax bill and adoption of first constituencies recess report and the general summon of line ministries,” Mayar explained.

Meanwhile, Tommy Mawien Yuot, an MP representing Tonj South, called on the executive to consider the assembly as part of governance while urging his colleagues to interact with constituents for the common good.

“Our recess as assembly members is to go and collect data from our people in counties, payams, bomas and villages. That is why we worked for three months and recess for another three months,” he said.

“We need to appreciate one member of cabinet Honorable Ring and UNMISS, for providing mobility to the assembly members because imagine one hundred MPs have only one car which the speaker uses. So we need to cooperate because we have the shared ministries here like I am the chairperson of good governance, which is equivalent to Ministry of Local government,” he added.
