Warrap State’s Minister of Information on Wednesday solemnly announced the passing of Tereza Awien Dhal, the Deputy Chairperson of the State Anti-Corruption Commission.
Late Tereza Awien, a native of Tonj North County in Akop Payam, passed away during the night of June 11th at Comboni Hospital in Western Bahr El Ghazal State-Wau. She had been admitted there for medical treatment.
William Wol Mayom, the Information Minister of Warrap State, told Radio Tamazuj that the late Tereza’s body was taken to her ancestral village in Akop for burial. The government and her family jointly made the arrangements, while the government declared three days of mourning.
“It is important to clarify that Late Hon. Tereza Awien was the Deputy Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Commission, representing the SPLM-IG,” Minister Wol explained. “She exhibited mild symptoms of malaria and was urgently transported to Comboni Hospital in Wau, where she passed away on June 11th. Her remains were then taken to Akop Payam, Tonj North County, for burial.”
Wol further highlighted that Tereza Awien had an illustrious career in various political and social sectors, both in Warrap State and the now-defunct Tonj State, as well as in community associations.
“Late Hon. Awien served as the Minister of Animal Resources in Warrap State, former Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Physical Infrastructure in the former Tonj State. She possessed significant political and social expertise throughout her lifetime, making her an exceptional leader. In light of this tragic loss, the State Governor has declared three days of mourning, during which the flag will be flown at half-mast from the 13th to the 15th of this month,” the minister stated.
Minister William added that Tereza Awien Dhal had also served as the Secretary of Gender Affairs for the Greater Tonj Leadership Council and as a community leader for Akop Payam in the Apuk Padoc section of Tonj North County, Warrap State.
Meanwhile, Deng Angok Angok, the Acting Chairperson of the Warrap Youth Union, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Tereza Awien.
“On behalf of the Warrap Youth Union and personally, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family and government for the loss of our respected mother and leader, the late Tereza Awien. She played pivotal roles in numerous political arenas in both the former Tonj and Warrap State,” he said.
The youth leader called upon the government to provide support to her family, stating, “I urge the Warrap State government to assist her children, relatives, and other dependents during this challenging time. There is now a void that needs to be filled, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure the education and well-being of those she cared for.”
