In opening the ninth state legislative assembly today, Warrap Governor Nyanden Malek Deliec called for a discussion of the security situation and for solutions to end ethnic conflict in the state.

Malek appealed to the house to release members from the conflicting Apuk and Aguok constituencies for a peace conference scheduled to take place in the coming weeks. The two communities have a tradition of conflict that the body will attempt to resolve.

Malek also called for ongoing cooperation between the different branches of state government.

Warrap Legislative Assembly Speaker Madot Dut Deng said the relationship between the two branches has been excellent. But Madot explained that state legislators had not enacted enough laws over the past five years due to issues of logistics and finance. He called on the ministers to introduce more bills for discussion in the coming session.

Malek said the past few years have seen improvements in food security, economic development and governance in the state.
