The committee headed by Vice President Hussein Abdelbhagi Akol which was tasked by President Salva Kiir on 18 February to investigate the violence between Twic and Ngok Dinka communities, said it has completed investigations.
According to the committee, they interviewed Warrap State government officials and Twic community leaders, including women and youth, who all said the incident was unintentional and that they are ready to make peace with the Ngok Dinka.
Earlier last in February, deadly clashes erupted between Ngok Dinka of Abyei Administrative Area and the Twic community in Warrap State.
Tor Deng Mawein, the secretary of the investigative committee told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that their work officially commenced at the Twic County headquarters in Turalei on 22 February.
“We have come here and I am speaking from Turalei, the headquarters of Twic County, and the committee started its work to investigate and find facts from the Twic community,” Deng said. “We began with the Warrap State governor who gave us details on the violence between the two communities and we have also interviewed the Twic County commissioner and the Turalei Payam inspector.”
He added: “We have also talked to paramount chiefs, sub-chiefs, women groups, and youth in all six payams in Twic County. The women declared their readiness for peace with Ngok Dinka and said that what happened was unintentional.”
Deng said the committee would soon travel to Abyei to meet the Ngok Dinka and carry out similar investigations before a peace conference is organized for the belligerent communities.
