Warrap governor replaces Twic County commissioner

The governor Warrap state in South Sudan, Nyandeng Malek, has issued a gubernatorial order replacing sacked Twic County Commissioner Biar Biar with Joseph Majak. She has not explained the reasons for her decision.

Former commissioner Biar was one of the officials summoned by the state legislative assembly in May over a host of administrative matters, including allegations of collecting taxes in the form of cows and harassing and mistreating local chiefs as well as the expulsion of the first grade judge in the county.

The state parliament in response the allegations convened a special session during which a resolution was passed directing Governor Malek to dismiss the former commissioner from his position.

Speaking yesterday, Gaetano Atem, a legislator from Twic said the decision to relieve the commissioner was long overdue, claiming the governor was hesitant to act until the mounting pressure seeking her removal from office forced her to take the decision against her will.

“The governor did not want to act but I think she sensed the coming of the kind of political storm in July. She was under pressure to implement this long-awaited and overdue decision.”

“The state legislative assembly passed a resolution in May and directed her to make changes in the county but she was hesitant until she found herself overwhelmed and hard pressed to make decision,” he explained.
