Inter-communal fighting in South Sudan’s Warrap state has driven over 100 households into the contested area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan.

The conflict-affected families are living in a school east of Agok area and are in need of food, the head of the Abyei Relief and Rehabilitation Commission told Radio Tamazuj.

The official said his commission intends to assess their humanitarian conditions in order to provide assistance.

New mosque to be built

Separately, the Abyei area administration has decided to allocate a plot for Muslim community to build a mosque in the area.

Deng Bol Athuai, deputy head of the area’s administration, told Radio Tamazuj that they will approve the mosque’s land in a cabinet meeting next week.

He pointed out that it is a constitutional right for Muslims to have their mosque in the area. Muslims in the Abyei area have reportedly been praying in open areas especially during Islamic occasions.

Meanwhile, several Muslims expressed their happiness about the recent decision to allocate them a piece of land for the mosque. They confirmed their readiness to build the mosque in the area as soon as possible.
