Warrap caretaker governor calls for prayers, peace efforts for Tonj East

Akec Tong Aleu, caretaker governor of Warrap state, has called on religious leaders to organise special sessions and prayers for peace and reconciliation to unite the warring communities in the state, particularly those in Tonj East County.

Speaking in an interview on Friday, Akec said he spent two weeks in Romic, the administrative headquarters of Tonj East county where clashes between Luacjang and Thiik resulted in the death of more than 90 people and wounding 144, talking to both communities to resolve the dispute and unite them so that they are able to come together and live again peacefully as brothers and sisters as before.

“These are the same people, with the same traditions, the same language but the devil comes in and divides them to kill themselves. As the government, we have tried the best within our power and ability but it is the time for our religious leaders to come and preach love, peace, reconciliation and forgiveness. We need them to forgive each other so that they can begin to work together,” said Akec.

He says his visit to the area has helped avert major conflict and brought together different groups of community leaders, the heads of local organised forces, youth and women in the area. The governor explained several committees with membership of the parties to the conflict have been formed to resolve the dispute.

Akec said his security advisor has been tasked with the investigation of the root causes while another official from the area he identified as Maper Marier has been tasked to make necessary efforts to reconcile all the two sides. The chief from the area and heads of various youth groups have expressed willingness to cooperate with investigation committee and to contribute ideas for reconciliation.
