Warrap authorities identify 19 suspects in Tonj East violence

The government of Warrap State is searching for at least 19 people suspected of taking part in the recent inter-clan clashes in Tonj East County that left dozens dead.

Extra police have been sent from Kwajok and Juba to help keep the peace in Tonj East after at least 40 people were killed and 66 others wounded in fighting between Wun-Adeel the Wun-Thuch clans, Radio Miraya reported.

Speaking on the UN radio station, Paul Dhel Gum, the Warrap State Minister of Information said the security forces have identified some suspects and are seeking to arrest them.

“Now we are expecting all the chiefs to come here and the chiefs will be meeting with us from area to area to arrest the suspects,” he said.

“And we have told the chiefs anybody who is a suspect has to turn in himself, or else accept arrest. And if he attempts to resist arrest then force will be used to apprehend them,” added the minister.

Dhel disclosed, “The total of 19 suspects will be now on our list and the suspects may increase, given the flow of the information that we are getting from our security forces and from elders who are actually trying to diffuse the public, they are now supplying us with a lot of information.”
