War disrupts farming activities in Darfur, renders displaced people food insecure

The displaced people in the Darfur region are facing challenges getting food as a result of lack of cultivation this year occasioned by the war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Most of the displaced people are farmers who fled from their homes and sought refuge in safer localities and towns.

The impact of displacement and the lack of cultivation this season has led to a lack of food in some centers such as the Al-Israa and Rufaida schools and other centers in Al-Fasher in North Darfur State where IDPs have not received relief food and other aid.

The Humanitarian Aid Commission in the Darfur region also said that after the new influx of IDPs, it has become increasingly difficult to get food for them.

The coordinator of the Israa Center, Al-Tahir Tita, said there are centers reception centers like Al Saura, the Martyrs Center, and other new centers that have not received any food.

“Over the past one month, the displaced persons have been depending only on some well-wishers who donate some food including sheep and cattle for food,” he said.

Tita attributed the shortage of food to the lack of security during the agricultural season.

“There is food shortage because some armed herders who do not adhere to grazing in agreed areas, the reluctance of some farmers to cultivate due to insecurity and the presence of pests,” he explained.

The coordinators of the Al-Isra and Rufaidah Centers confirmed that their food rations ran out a month ago and appealed to aid organizations and the regional government to help them.
