Sudanese Security and Military Intelligence Service in West Kordofan State have banned transport companies from working with UN forces in the contested territory of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan.

Sudanese Security and Military Intelligence Service in West Kordofan State have banned transport companies from working with UN forces in the contested territory of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan.

A source told Radio Tamazuj yesterday that security agents in the area halted the transportation of building materials by trucks contracted by UNISFA meant for the implementation of development projects in the area.

Security forces threatened to confiscate the trucks if they continued to transport building materials to the area. About 150 trucks were stopped from El Hijeirat area in West Kordofan, according to the same source.

This move contradicts President Omar Hassan al Bashir’s pledge to link Abyei with a road network as well as the provision of basic services during a campaign rally in El Fula town in West Kordofan last week.

In February, Sudan’s First Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh also announced plans by his government to support development projects and peace efforts in the contested Abyei Area after a meeting with the co-chair of the Abyei Joint Oversight Committee (AJOC) Hassan Ali Nemir.
