W Bahr al Ghazal speaker challenges impeachment vote

The speaker of Western Bahr el Ghazal state Legislative Assembly Andrea Mayar Acho has defied his recent impeachment.

The speaker of Western Bahr el Ghazal state Legislative Assembly Andrea Mayar Acho has defied his recent impeachment.

On Tuesday, MPs of Western Bahr al Ghazal parliament passed a vote of no confidence against Speaker Andrea Mayar, after a motion raised by Abraham Dimo Cirilo.

In a press conference yesterday, Andrea described the move taken against him as illegitimate because there was no quorum. He said the decision violates law and state assembly’s conduct of business regulations.

“You know, the Tuesday sitting in which I was allegedly impeached, the quorum was not enough and also the average to remove me did not reach 29 members,” he said.

8 members were absent during the impeachment vote.

The impeached speaker denied claims he attended the sitting under pressure. He emphasised that the political dispute within the assembly will be resolved through legal ways.

Lawmakers said that they impeached Andea over “persistent” absenteeism.

Andrea says he has been absent beacuse he doesn’t have a car, and accused the governor Rizig Zachariah of being behind the matter.
