Members of Western Bahr el Ghazal State Legislative Assembly on Thursday elected a new Speaker who was sworn in before the head of high court, the State Deputy Governor and Cabinet Ministers.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj following the vote, Abraham Dimo said Mario Nyibang John was elected in a quorum of 27 MPs present in the assembly out of 43 total.

He said the sitting in which the speaker was elected was also attended by the deputy governor Zachariah Joseph Garang.

The election of Nyibang comes just days after the impeachment of former speaker Andrea Mayar who was accused of “persistent” absenteeism.

Dimo previously said the move was taken in accordance to Article 65 (1) of the state Transitional Constitution 2011, which gives powers to the MPs to elect and remove their leaders within the assembly supported by article 90 of the conduct of business regulations of the assembly.
