W. African peacekeepers in Sudan banned from going home due to Ebola

The United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the North Darfur Ministry of Health have banned personnel from visiting West African countries affected by the Ebola virus.

The United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the North Darfur Ministry of Health have banned personnel from visiting West African countries affected by the Ebola virus.

The announcement means peacekeeping troops from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria—all countries affected by Ebola—cannot return to their home countries during leave.

About 3,000 Nigerian soldiers, 150 Sierra Leoneans, and over 100 Guineans are serving in UNAMID.

Last week, Sudan denied there were any cases of Ebola in its borders and banned the media from reporting stories related to the issue.

Director General of the State Ministry of Health Ali Ismail Yahya said the ban would not be lifted until the epidemic is over in West Africa.
