Militia loyal to the Juba government set fire to vehicles belonging to displaced people outside the gate of the UN Mission base in Malakal on Monday morning, according to local sources.
Displaced people inside the UN Malakal ‘Protection of Civilian’ site told Radio Tamazuj that militias wearing military uniforms burned about 11 vehicles belonging to displaced people in front of the gate of IDP camp and near Rwandan troops serving with the UN peacekeeping mission.
The vehicles had belonged to displaced people. They had left them outside the UN base when they fled inside seeking shelter. The sources added that they informed the head of the UN mission in the area whom they said promised to keep away the SPLA and its allied militias in order to prevent attacks on the displaced people and their properties.
Meanwhile, the camp in Malakal has also witnessed inter-communal clashes in the past few days which led to the death and injury of a number of displaced people, besides the injury of a peacekeeper.
