The United States Embassy in Jakarta in Indonesia says it is “concerned over Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir’s travel to Indonesia,” citing a warrant for Bashir’s arrest by the International Criminal Court.
Bashir arrived in Indonesia on Sunday, defying an international warrant for his arrest, to attend an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation summit.
In a statement today, the US Embassy pointed out that Bashir “has been charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC) with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
“Warrants for his arrest remain outstanding,” the statement adds.
However, Indonesia is not a member of the ICC.
The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Bashir in 2009 and 2010, accusing him of masterminding genocide and other atrocities in his campaign to crush a revolt in the western Darfur region.
