US dollar price still rises against Sudan pound

The price of the US dollar against the Sudanese pound rose to 8.85 SDG on Thursday in the parallel market in Khartoum.

Economists and traders in the parallel (black) market for foreign currency in downtown Khartoum have attributed the rise in the dollar price in part to strained relations between Khartoum and Juba, and the concern over a potential stop of oil flow from the southern fields.

The dollar stabilized in March at a price of 8.22 SDG, helped by a major deposit made by Qatar to the Sudanese central bank. However, it soon began to rise again. By 24 March, one US dollar was selling for 8.5 SDG compared to 8.2 at the end of February.

Currency traders have also been concerned about restrictive measures taken by foreign banks against Sudanese banks, causing the exchange rate to inch even higher.
