A man who was arrested on Thursday last week for killing a policeman in Uror County in Jonglei State has been set free after he paid 100 cows as blood compensation to the deceased’s family.

Sergeant Dama Yol was killed during an exchange of fire with an armed youth last Monday while leading a troop of policemen sent to recover stolen cattle from Ayod County and driven to Uror’s Paluony Payam.

Machot Gatluak Kenyjak, the Uror County commissioner, told Radio Taamazuj that the murderer was arrested days after the incident and that a settlement had already been reached.

“On Thursday, the killer of the policeman was apprehended at a village in Paluony. He admitted to the killing and apologized,” he said. “As a result, the two families agreed to settle the case peacefully. And as per our customary laws, 100 cows were paid as blood money in compensation.”

The county commissioner pointed out that the area remained calm after the incident.

‘There is no problem. Both families agreed on the issue of blood compensation, and on Friday, 100 cows paid as blood compensation reached the family of the deceased in the Pathai area,” he said.
