Upper Nile Governor launches Malakal incident probe

The Governor of Upper Nile State, James Odhok Oyai, issued State Decree No. 27 of 2024, establishing a committee to investigate the events in Malakal at the end of last month, which resulted in numerous casualties.

Major General Chol Atem, Director of the Upper Nile State Police and the committee’s rapporteur, stated to Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the committee consists of nine members, headed by the Deputy Governor and including government, legal officials, and security service leaders.

“The committee is responsible for investigating the Malakal incident on May 30th and 31st, which led to the deaths of several citizens. It will also arrest those involved and bring them to justice,” Chol explained.

The state police official stated that the committee has fifteen days from the date of the decision to complete its tasks.

Malakal town recently witnessed violence between the Shilluk and Dinka communities, resulting in 9 deaths and 7 injuries. No arrests have been made so far.
