Schooling has reportedly stopped in Maban County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile state owing to non-payment of teacher’s salaries since February.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday from the area, the Director of Education in Maban, Sadiq Mabrouk, said teachers have gone unpaid by the state government since February up till now.
Teachers in Maban and their families are facing tough living conditions, while their fellow teachers in the neighbouring counties receive salaries regularly, according to the director.
“You see, the salary payment committee came to Melut, Falouj and Renk as well as Manyo counties, nevertheless it could not come to Maban County,” he explained.
He noted the local education authorities decided to postpone the primary school examinations which were scheduled to kick off at this time, due to the ongoing fighting in the state as well as the absence of teachers in schools.
”The teachers became frustrated, because they went unpaid for almost four month since Februaryـ that was a clear reason that prompted them to absent themselves from schools,” he emphasized.
Mabrouk also called on the authorities concerned to pay the salaries of the teachers as soon as possible so that they can resume their work normally.
