UNMISS urges South Sudan to uphold rule of law

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Thursday called on the government to continue upholding the rule of law.

Speaking at the United Nations Day 2024 celebrations, UNMISS Force Commander Lt Gen Mohan Subramanian, said the mission would help strengthen the rule of law.

“They also try to shift the development positively in collaboration with the government and people of South Sudan. We work with our national counterparts to strengthen the rule of law and accountability by assessing the deployment of ad hoc codes, especially in very hard to reach areas,” Subramanian said.

He said the human rights teams would continue to monitor and sensitize national bodies to prevent rights violations and uphold accountability.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Juba, Prof Justus Wani Jada, stressed the need to embrace diversity as well as forging a common national identity to foster peace.

“Today, every country has to address circumstances that have global consequences, political and economic polarization. It has become clearer and stronger that all nations must act toget her for every nation to be better. As a young nation, we face problems in celebrating and accepting our own diversity as well as forging a common national identity,” Jada said.

The United Nations Day is an annual event marked on October 24 to reflect on the official creation of the UN in October 1994.

This year’s event was marked under the theme; ‘Building a Better Future Together’.

It was celebrated with art exhibition by the University of Juba, College of Fine Art students, as well as cultural performances, music and speeches.

In addition, there was a tree planting ceremony in support of environmental sustainability.
