Women leaders in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are undergoing training by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) office in Aweil to enhance their participation in the country’s politics.
UNMISS Gender Affairs Unit in collaboration with the state gender and social development ministry launched the three-day women empowerment workshop also aimed at preparing women for the elections come 2024.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the Team Leader for Gender Affairs Unit, Sarwa Gader, said UNMISS encourages increased participation and involvement of women in all political processes in South Sudan.
“Our aim in this workshop is to empower women’s participation in politics and we wanted to enhance them before the elections,” Gader said. “We also wanted to empower the role of civil society organizations, human rights organizations, and media on the election process.”
Rose Nyanut Awuk, a participant in the workshop, said she was glad to attend the workshop but requested that they receive certification for the training.
“I would love it if we can be given certificates that can identify what we have gone through because the certificate will help you when applying for a new job,” she said. “It seems that some participants have never attended this workshop and the knowledge they will gain from it will get them exposure and many people will learn from them.”
Another partaker, Santino Piol Garang, said he was commitment to empowering every woman in the area. “I am expecting much knowledge from this training and take the knowledge to our people so that can spread peace and empower every woman in our society.”
About 30 participants are attending theworkshop.
