UNMISS reported mortar fire near Malakal on Tuesday

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) reported mortar fire near Upper Nile state capital Malakal two days ago, according to the UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, who spoke at the UN headquarters yesterday.

UNMISS reported “hearing mortar shells yesterday morning in Malakal in Upper Nile State, coming from the direction of the west bank of river Nile,” he said.

“The Mission says it is not in a position to confirm who was shelling,” he added.

Also in Malakal, about 260 new internally displaced persons arrived at the UNMISS base in a single day, coming from the west bank of the Nile. Dujarric said they were “fleeing violence as well as food insecurity.”

There are currently more than 45,000 residents sheltering in the Protection of Civilians site in Malakal.
