The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has for the last two weeks been carrying out a series of workshops to forge unity and inculcate a culture of teamwork among members of various political parties in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State’s coalition government.

Participants who attended the workshop thanked the UN for the initiative and said it will lead to better service delivery.

Deng Deng Wek, one of the participants, said, “The workshops were so beautiful because we understood how to become a leader in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State and how to offer services. Know that you were appointed to take responsibility. Another thing, the appointed government officials are hailing from different political parties and are tasked to unite and work together regardless of their political affiliations.”

Rose Agol, the gender advisor in the state ministry of social development and welfare said they will resume their duties with a spirit of teamwork, love, and unity.

“I understood many things such as leadership skills and ethics. I will start the work with what I learned from here and it makes a change for all of us. We were trained on unity among the members of the government of national unity,’’ Agol said.

Mohammed Mustafa Mohammed, the former mayor of Aweil town, who was recently appointed as a member of the employee justice commission, said the workshop enhanced unity so that they will excel in service delivery.

“Of course, we attended the workshops as the government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. We come from different political parties and this is a transitional government of national unity and it is great to have these workshops to unite all government officials for the sake of peace and service delivery for the citizens,’’ said Mustafa.

The acting UNMISS head of field office in Aweil, Inecita Montera, appreciated the government officials in her closing remarks last Thursday and tasked them to work collectively to promote peaceful coexistence and citizens’ access to social services.

“Thank you very much! At least we managed to successfully reach the third and final day of our very heavy training workshops. So, what happened for the past three days is helping you in raising awareness on the important roles that you have in shaping Northern Bahr el Ghazal State and also deepening your understanding that no one can do the job alone for the state, but that it should be collective work from all of you,’’ Montera said.
