UNMISS head calls for reconciliation during visit to Wau

Special Representative of the Secretary General with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, Hilde Johnson, paid a visit to Western Bahr El-Ghazal state on Wednesday in her first visit since clashes which claimed the lives of at least 14 people in December.

After paying her condolences to the families and relatives of those killed during the events in Wau, she stated that UNMISS will investigate root causes of the events and work with the state government find possible solutions and bring the perpetrators to justice.

However, Johnson urged local authorities and community leaders in Wau to work hard in order to regain comprehensive peace through national reconciliation and to move past disagreement in order for it to be lasting.

The clashes, which killed at least 14 and injured dozens more, followed protests over the proposed move of the county headquarters outside of the town of Baggari.
