The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) on Friday condemned a recent attack on a humanitarian convoy accompanied by peacekeepers in Aniydi Payam, located in Bor South County, Jonglei State.
The incident occurred as the convoy was traversing through Macdit, situated 60 kilometers from Bor town, when a group of armed individuals emerged from the surrounding bushes.
One of them opened fire on UN vehicles, resulting in damage to an UNMISS vehicle. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as UNMISS peacekeepers promptly returned fire, successfully repelling the attackers.
Nicholas Haysom, the Secretary General’s Special Representative to South Sudan and head of UNMISS, expressed his concern, stating, “This attack jeopardized the lives of humanitarians delivering crucial assistance to communities in need, as well as peacekeepers providing protection. It is entirely unacceptable.”
“We commend the swift response of the Government of Jonglei State, which promptly deployed a joint protection team comprising local forces to the scene to offer assistance. It is crucial that a comprehensive investigation is conducted, and the individuals responsible for the attack are held accountable,” he emphasized.
