Authorities in the disputed Abyei Administrative Area report that the Anet area of Rumamer County was attacked by a group of unknown gunmen on Thursday evening.
Details of the attack remain scanty.
Kelek Kon, the Abyei Security Adviser, told Radio Tamazuj last evening that he was traveling to the area to assess the situation.
“I am traveling to Anet now where there are clashes to assess the damage,” he said.
Abyei information minister Ajak Deng Miyen also said he received information about the attack in Anet but said he was waiting for detailed information.
“I heard that some people came and started shooting at the people, this is what I heard and I don’t have further information,” Deng said.
According to unconfirmed reports, the attackers came from Twic County of neighboring Warrap State.
A resident who preferred anonymity claimed the attackers raided cattle and destroyed the Anet market.
“There was an armed group that came with heavy guns on a pick-up and attacked Anet just this evening. They raided cattle and destroyed the Anet Market. This is an organized force hailing from Twic County in Warrap State,” he alleged.
