A sudden high fever has caused the death of three displaced in El Salam camp, near South Darfur’s capital of Nyala. The causes are unknown.
Speaking to Radio Dabanga, camp sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya reported that a baby girl and her mother died of the fever on Monday, a few hours after the mother had given birth. Another woman died last week.
Tabaldiya said that the two hospitals at the camp daily receive more than 600 people suffering from the fever, including many children.
He called upon the Ministry of Health and health organisations to “immediately intervene, find out what is causing this fever, and provide medicines”.
El Salam camp is overcrowded, the sheikh told Radio Dabanga in June. In March and April, more than 11,000 newly displaced sought refuge at the camp that was already housing more than 80,000 displaced. The people had fled attacks on more than 100 villages southeast of Nyala in the end of February by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
