University students in Wau protest lack of electricity, water

Students of the University of Bahr el Ghazal in South Sudan's Wau today staged a peaceful demonstration against the absence of water and electricity for several weeks.

Some of the students told Radio Tamazuj the lack of electricity and water makes it difficult for them to study and even bathe.

“This is a real problem as we stay in the campus without showering and no power for us to read at night," said one student. "It is said water is life and how do they expect us to live in the absence of water and power one them has question?”

The students said they blocked the main road near the university to alert the authorities over their grievances. They say their protest is not intend to cause panic in the town but only that to let the University administration and state government know that it is vital for them to have constant water supplied and electricity.

Another student confirmed that governor Elia Waya and University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Samson Sakara called a meeting with the students and that the governor promised to take full responsibility of supplying water to the University.

The same student said the governor donated fifty barrels of diesel and after they received the diesel the students have called off the protest and return back to their hostels.

“What we need is power and water to shower and if we have diesel to have back water and electricity then we will stop demonstration but if we are not going to receive the diesel then we shall continue with out protest," a student said.

The university administration could not be reach for comment.
