A university student has been arrested by Sudanese security forces on suspicion of spying for the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-North and he will appear before a military court in the North Kordofan capital.
Saeed Mohamed Al Awad, a second year student of economic and social studies at the University of Khartoum, was detained in Shamshaga area in Sudan’s South Kordofan State several months ago.
The accused will appear before a military court in El Obeid along with other suspects facing similar charges. Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Al Fateh Mohamed Al Awad, brother of the detained student, said his brother is innocent and had no link with the rebels.
“My brother is accused of spying for the SPLA-N, so was taken to El Obeid town by the Sudan Armed Forces to appear before a court martial along with others,” said the brother.
He insisted on Al Awad’s innocence, explaining, “He just came to Shamshaga area to evacuate his elderly mother who had sustained an injury during aerial bombardment by the Sudanese Air Force.”
The detained student has been subjected to torture since his arrest four months ago and was denied permission to communicate with his family, according to the same source. The family expressed concern about the fate of their son and called on human rights defenders to intervene to secure his immediate release from military custody.
