The workers’ union at the University of Bahr el Ghazal in Wau on Friday suspended their strike till 26 April.
Last week, the teaching and support staff at the university went on strike and demanded the national finance ministry clear their salary arrears for February and March using the new enhanced salary structure, and pay their medical allowances and return air tickets.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, the secretary general for the university’s workers’ union, Bol Maker, said they suspended the strike until 26t April and will take further action if the staff is not paid.
“The general assembly lifted the strike until 26 April and if the finance ministry does not pay using the new salary structure, then we will adopt new measures of striking,” he said. “Today (Friday), the general assembly conducted a meeting to evaluate the first stage of the strike which ended last week, and resolved to reject any payment using the old salary structure that does not reflect the new one passed by the national council of ministers.”
“The lectures and workers at the University of Bahr el Ghazal have been patient for a long time and it is now time for the finance ministry to address their needs,” he added.
Maker said the university staff have always compromised and lifted their strikes so that the students continue learning.
